Study Permit

Understand the conditions of the study permit

The study permit is a document issued to allow foreign nationals study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) in Canada.

While studying in Canada under a study permit you must:

  • always be enrolled at a DLI
  • make progress towards completing your program
  • respect any conditions listed on your study permit
  • stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements and
  • leave Canada when your permit expires

Depending on your case, there may be conditions on your study permit such as:

  • the level of studies you can attend
  • if you are allowed to work in Canada
  • if you can’t travel within Canada
  • the date you must stop studying

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Work permit that is issued for eligible graduates

The Post-graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) allows students who graduated from eligible Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) to obtain an open work permit to obtain Canadian work experience.

Before applying for a study permit in Canada, selecting the learning institution is important to ensure that the student may be eligible after graduation for an open work permit.

The duration of the work permit will vary depending on the graduate’s program of study length.

Apart from choosing the right learning institution, there are other eligibility requirements such as:
• The program of study must be at least 8 months in duration.
• The student must maintain full-time student status in Canada.
• Receive transcript and an official letter from the learning institution confirming they met the requirements to complete the program.
